FS1 flash arresters

According to VDI regulation 2052 "Ventilation equipment for kitchens", commercial kitchens must be equipped with flash arresters made in stainless steel to separate aerosols produced in the preparation of food. These filters must also act as spark arresters to protect downstream equipment.

fs1Heckmann FS1 flash arresters consist of two linked metal sheet trays carrying fins with a semi-circular cross section.

When the exhaust air passes between the fins, it is whirled around at high speed. In this process, the heavy grease particles are propelled against the fin surfaces where they are caught and eventually drained off through a filter (self-cleaning effect).

The separation ratio of the fractions has been determined by the Fraunhofer institute for Toxicology and Aerosol Research in Hanover.

Due to the advanced design of the FS1 arresters, they achieve excellent separation ratios and meet the requirements of the US standard UL 1046 (standard for grease filters for exhaust ducts).

Heckmann FS1 flash arresters are also used in industrial plants for the cleaning of exhaust air.

FS1 Tandem flash arresters

The fraction separation ratio of a filter system can be further improved by installing two FS1 flash arresters in the exhaust duct, one behind the other.
The effectiveness of the tandem arrester is further enhanced by the double deflection of the air as it flows through the fins. The combination of two arresters also results in an even greater whirling effect between the arrester backs.

FST1 spark arresters

The FST1 spark arrester is the latest Heckmann development and contributes significantly to fire safety in kitchens and industrial plants. The FST1 arrester is equipped with a system that shuts off the air flow through the arrester the moment a fire is detected in the kitchen. This not only prevents flames from reaching other parts of the building but also reduces the spreading of fumes.

Principle: The front side of the FST1 spark arrester is equipped with pre-tensioned screw compression springs that act as handles. Between the two metal sheet trays of the arrester, there is a gap required for the effective separation of liquids and solid particles. The trays are kept apart by internal spacers.

These spacers are made of material that melts at a temperature of about 100°C, so that the two arrester trays are pushed against each other by the pre-tensioned springs. The gap between the fins is thus closed, blocking off the air flow. The springs relax, indicating that the arrester has lost its air cleaning capacity.

Spark arresters that are not destroyed by the fire can subsequently be fitted with new spacers and used again.

FST1 spark arresters are a cost-effective alternative to fire dampers built into the exhaust gas duct. They can easily be retrofitted and offer the same pressure reduction and separation capacity as the FS1 flash arresters. They even look the same as the FS1 arresters. FST1 spark arresters can be combined with FS1 flash arresters.

FH1 arresters for domestic kitchens

Conventional extractor vans for domestic kitchens are equipped with aluminium meshes acting as grease filters. Greasy filters are a serious fire hazard and must therefore be cleaned regularly in the dishwasher. 

fh1Heckmann now offers a solution for kitchens based on the tried and tested principle of flash arresters. The product takes into account the restricted space and the various filter dimensions of domestic extractor systems.

The FH1 stainless steel arrester for kitchens is only 10 mm thick and is available in any desired size.

It is made in brightened stainless steel and is supplied with a protective film. FH1 stainless steel arresters look good and are therefore particularly suitable for installation at eye level at an angle of about 45°. This layout is standard for commercial extractor hoods and offers a number of advantages:

Flash arresters are more or less self-cleaning, so that rinsing is reduced to a minimum.
They offer a virtually constant drag and consistent separation ratio. Compared with conventional grease filters in kitchens, flash arresters offer a great protection against fire.
